The most important part of being a trainer is understanding how people learn. Without that, there's a danger that all the trainer concentrates on doing is stuffing people with information. That's not training – that's called 'stuffing people with information'!

We'll take you through some learning theories such as Kolb's Learning Styles, and the Multiple Intelligences Model. We'll also look at the different stages of learning, barriers that get in the way and things that you can do to motivate learners.

We'll introduce you to a very simple training cycle and then take you through it step-by-step, thinking about both one-to-one training, and training to groups of learners.

We give you some great advice and tools for identifying training needs and planning an effective training session, with ideas for how you can structure your sessions. We've also included some detailed guidance on preparing and using a wide range of visual and other learning aids.

Then we'll give you some tips on the actual training delivery, with a key emphasis on checking the learner's understanding – this is the most commonly missed aspect of training, and it's just such a shame to put all that effort into planning and delivering training if we don't check that the poor learner has understood a word of it! That leads us nicely to a word or two about evaluating training to complete the cycle.
